Just Thinking Out Loud..
Let us pretend for a minute that we could go back in time about ten years. We would be the same age, and everything else in out lives would be the same, just ten years earlier. What would be different.
We would not have computers or the internet as we know it. Just think about it. With the touch of a mouse keystroke, we can find our way to anywhere in the world. We can see what folks are doing in bonsai on any given day. Andy has been working on an Elm lately. I taught a workshop today, and repotted the grape I aquired. (pics to come) I thought, we don't need bonsai exhibits, we have them on a constant basis. Everytime we log on we can go anywhere we want to see what is going on in the bonsai world. That ten years ago, what if you had no internet. How did you see images of bonsai unless you drove to a exhibit. What if you lived in a state that had no bonsai exhibits. Ah.. books...we can get our images there. Maybe your local book store sold no bonsai books. You could order them, but it would be sight unseen, and you had little in the way of a review. You can ask for a review of a book on any forum and get results within hours. What if.. an enterprising individual were to send out photograph release forms to a giant mailing list of bonsai artists in the USA. What if...you asked these artists to take their tree to a professional photograpy studio and capture it on a great background with suitable stand and accent plant or three point presentation. What if... this enterprising fellow were to bind these images all together into a large format coffee table book of great American Bonsai. What if... all the bonsai image owners were to be given a book for their effort, with the rest of the proceeds to go towards building that wonderfull USA exhibit I have heard so much about. This whole thing could be accomplished from the comfort of your home office in a matter of months or less. Sounds to me like we just had a large exhibit without really even having to have one. Of course we wouldn't be standing around BS'ing about all of our conquests in bonsai or how many Masakuni tools we have. Thats got to be the highlight of the exhibit right? I don't know about anyone else, but I have seen more high quality bonsai images, and learned more in the last three years, then in the last 17 years before that. The internet is a wonderful tool, I don't think it is being used to its full potential yet. I think we have barely scratched the surface. Lets get busy! Happy Holidays, Bonsai-al
