Just A Rock
Recently I acquired this rock. Kind of a cool thing. Reminds me of some of the scenes I have seen out west.
Can almost imagine Hopolong Cassidy galloping by it in one of those old westerns. A lot of my friends want me to keep it as a viewing stone (Suiseki ) . Me I think it aught to be slapped into a pot as part of a Penjing. So what does everyone think. A rock in a pot or a landscape ;o) I am somewhat open to suggestions. It is a bit large. About 20 inches from stem to stern and about 60 lbs. Any way you look at it needs a permanent place to set. Any ideas . |

I got to go with the Landscape... It's an interesting rock certainly, but it will still be an interesting rock as a background for a landscape... I could see some moss growing on the slab portion as a prairie would meet the mountains... as for trees... Pine comes to mind as a choice I would use... maybe a windswept gnarled looking tree... towards the right hand side... Looks like a good candidate for a rectangular pot, and a rather large one at that...

Hi, Ron.
Great rock! I think you'd need a HUGE Penjing to make it work. On the other hand, a suiban big enough would break the bank! Maybe you have a white elephant (supposedly given by the king of Siam as a gift to bankrupt those of whom he disapproved). ![]() |

Definitely a suiseki!
saikei stones are a dime a dozen. An attractive suiseki is art in its own right, and much more rare. I am seeing a figure stone here. Maybe an old boot on the porch? In Japan, these are the rare and wonderful "Kutsu-seki." Regards, Matt

My opinion is with TreeBay on this one...although it would look nice with some green plants, you rarely find such a nice viewing stone...a real nice find you have here Ron...

Ron:
What ever you decide to do with this rock, it should be placed along side that 29 tree BC forest. Not for compitition, but it seems that everthing you touch is getting larger, and you are getting to the age, when you should be down sizing your trees and rocks....(remember your back pain??) This way, when you have to move to your new location, the fellows who you are feeding coffee or beer will know what they are up against from the start.... My own opinion as to what you should do with the stone is to create the scene from your childhood (without Hop-a-long in the picture). A nostalgic leap to your mind's eye and with your creativity alive and well; it should be a wonder to view!

After listening to everyone's opinion I am kind of more undecided as to what to do than ever.
Maybe I should just put this rock out on the table with my trees and just study it for a while. It is kind of pleasing to the eye as is. One day it will come to me just what to do. But for now maybe I should just leave things alone. It is as I said a pleasing thing to look at. Could be that is just what it needed to be so why change things. It is after all a rock and has been waiting around for me to come along all those eons. A few more days (even years) wont hurt. Maybe something worthwhile will come to me if I just set back and enjoy this thing for a while before I change it forever. By the way Carl the forest is going to be moved this weekend to my house. If you drive down to help me move it I'll let you smell my turkey dinner and give you a cheap beer. ;o) |

I would like nothing better than to visit you, holiday or not, but 700 miles separates us, and for now, it could be 7000 miles... Sorry, I wont be there for the move.... ![]()
