Just for Fun - Scare Yourself - Or at least a Shock - An Exercise.

Take a seat and be prepared for a shock, or even a scare.

WARNING: If you are of a nervous disposition, look away now. If you have a heart condition, read this at your own risk.

For this exercise, you will need a bit of paper, something to write with and a calculator, or use of the little grey cells. Also a little bit of time is required.

This time of year is a time of reflection throughout much of the world. A time of contemplation of the achievements and mistakes of last year, and promises and plans for the future year for ourselves. In this vein, I have a bit of yule fun. Here we go:

Stage One
1. Firstly, write down every bonsai tool you have purchased this year. Everything. All the chopsticks, pot knives, cutters, snippers, crackers, jacks, benders... everything.

2. Next write down all the pots you have acquired this year. Everything. All the hand-made bespoke pots, pots you bought without even having a tree for the pot in question, training pots, accent pots, grow pots... everything.

3. Next write down all the bonsai training you have paid for this year. Everything. All the books, magazines, teachers, workshops, clubs. Possibly even the amount of time that you have spent here, on the internet reading stuff like what you are reading right now... everything. Go on! Do it!

4. Next, write down all the trees that you have bought this year. Everything. I ain't your wife or husband or partner so don't lie to me or yourself... everything.

5. Next, write down all the fertilisers and soils that you have gotten this year. Everything. All the Akadama, pumice, kitty litter, BioGold, pine bark, moss, kanuma, 0-10-10, turface, whatever... everything.[List getting long yet?].

6. Next, write down all the bonsai accoutrements that you have snaffled this year. Everything. All the scrolls, stands, benches, poles, turntables, backdrops, cameras, clothing (maybe?)... everything.

7. Finally, write down all the accent plants and stones you have amassed. Everything.

Stage Two
Put a cost against each item.

Stage Three
Add up cost.

Stage Four
Get scared!

Stage Five
Complete the poll...!

Cheers kids.

Fish.

Hows about the 'enough to cover a train ticket to the next town' option?

Something else scary (but not quite as scary as this), if you smoke add up all the money you literally burn and see how many wonderful trees and bits 'n' pieces you could have bought!
