Juniper Identification

Hey guys.

We have a juniper bush growing in our back yard and I would like to take a cutting from it. First off, I don't know what species it is as a tree book I have indicates the three native species of junipers (J. ashei, J. communis and J. pinchotii) do not grow in New England, is there a good resource for identifying this tree? I have attached pictures below for anyone who wants to take a stab at it themselves. Secondly, in what season should I attempt the cutting? I'm assuming it's too late to try it this year. Thanks!

I'm going to bet that your juniper is ornamental and not a native tree. My guess is it is a cultivar of J. chinensis (there are hundreds of them), though the foliage sort of reminds me of J. scopularum, the Rocky Mtn Juniper. The species J. scopularum is not commonly used in landscaping and most of the cultivars tend to be upright in their growth and your specimen seems to be more bush-like. A great book to help you is "Dirrs Manual of Woody Landscape Plants". It's not a key, but gives great descriptions of both native and ornamental trees. You might find it at your library.

Dav4, thanks. You're right in saying the Juniper is ornamental. Do you think I could cultivate it? If so, when would be the best time to take the cuttings?
