Greg, Here's the 2007 update on the manzanita. It seems to being doing quite well but could use some training as it is getting bushy. I wonder if the owner may be a little gun shy about pruning it?

Thanks for posting this, Al. It looks to me as though there is some die-back of the branches. Tom mentioned to me that he has problems with squirrels feeding on the buds. I think Tom's interest in this tree was to show that keeping manzanita alive in a pot in CA was indeed possible. There are many in CA that refuse to believe it because they have failed with it themselves. For the record, I collected this tree in Oct. of 2002, it went into the pot sometime late 2003/early 2004 and is still doing well now in 2007.

There is nothing wrong with taking it slow, but I agree with you that some styling could be done. Was there any wire on the tree? I have a branch from this tree that was ground-layering at the time I collected it which I have and I have begun styling with wire. New growth can be wired in the fall after the branch has hardened off enough to apply wire. In the case of Tom's tree, some very light pruning for shape could be done. Maybe I'll rattle his chain and find out how he's been doing

I believe that every bit of information i am granted access to is precious and for me, if a person invests time to answer a question or give an insight, i cannot ask for more.

I may be a newcomer to the forum, but i must stress out this: BONSAI IS SUPPOSED TO BE FUN. If i want to pick up a fight then there are so many places to go; this is not the place.

I am really sorry for the situation created here. So many bad things are happening around the world out of our control, and this is one of our (mine at least) peaceful hides away from all that crap. Please do not ruin it for the sake of minor misunderstandings.

Thank you and have a great weekend.

Stavros.

Stavros--sorry you are disappointed by our behavior. In the process of reaching an understanding, these discussions can get pretty messy. Sometimes an agreement is reached and other times we eventually agree to disagree and that's the end of it. You still got the best advice I could give you for next to nothing. And I guess I should unpack my suitcase since I still haven't got that plane ticket
