Yes, the spade is completely worthless when collecting from solid rock; the blunt blade is coming close but sounds way too weak to get the job done. You need a flat steel wrecking bar, the kind construction guys use to do demolition work when re-modeling houses. They cost less than $5 U.S. at a Home Depot or a Lowe's. Get the size that you can easily carry in your backpack but will be long enough to reach the bottom of the hole or crack.

There. I've given it all away now The only thing left to do is invite me there and I'll dig it for you

I'm not going to the trouble of taking a shot of a common tool that is widely available in most hardware stores and box stores--take a field trip to one of these places and see it for yourself. Better still spend five bucks and get your very own.

I also think that I've been pretty up-front about what to do with this tool. I'm not being flippant about asking a fee to demonstrate my knowledge to others; people pay big bucks to learn other skills for bonsai, why should collecting be any different?

You can also buy a DVD from Andy Smith (sorry to say I don't own it nor have I seen it) that takes you step by step through his collecting process. I went out collecting with Frank Harris and he said my technique was very similar to Andy's, that is how I found out about his DVD.

I would like to ask a simple question--why should I reveal every aspect of something that has taken me years to learn, that has cost me a considerable amount financially to sustain, on a very public forum? Andy gets $20 for his DVD and you want me to give it all away cause you want to know?

I think there are some who frequent these forums that are here for all they can get and are at times ingrateful about it. Now I understand that no one is forcing me or anyone to post here, but when I get the "put your money where your mouth is" response, it makes me pull away from here and give it a rest. I see where taking the bait on these challenges gets you nowhere.

So, I'll give you the same offer, Red Pine, that I gave the other guy: send me a plane ticket, put me up in a motel and I'll bring my tool kit and show you how each and every tool is used. Pretty good deal for you, if you ask me

Wow! Spoken like a true capitalist. Sure am glad John Naka and Harry Hirao didn't have your sentiment.

Regards, Al

Never put myself in their shoes, so don't go there. Damn right about the capitalist stuff. I'm an American, don't criticize me for doing what's done in the USA every waking day. If you'd like me to go away, that's really not a problem, Al. Who needs folks like me when there's "the great white collector" around to keep score

Hold on Lee!, I think Greg did a pretty good job of explanation for a reply to a thread, he wasn't trying to write a how to article, and the person asking for the advise recieved it well.

I also think that asking for a picture of a $5 crow bar is not what Greg expected, and was most likely joking about the plane ticket until he thought he was being pushed.

As far as the no clue remark - go away - or at least participate in the manner you speak of as OK, it's not like you have offered much here, then when you do it's barbs, practice what you preach.

Greg, RP wasn't exactly nasty either, so a tirade wasn't exactly due, there also is nothing wrong with offering your expertise for a fee, and most of us recognize that you don't go spoutin off unless you do have a clue. Thank You by the way.

Winter has been mild folks, why are we getting our knickers in a bunch, we can be much more productive than this. Sorry if I infringe on the mods teritory, this has been my modest opinion.

Bill

Greg, I have noticed before, and had meant to comment on the fact that you are a vey helpful guy, and the way that you kind of break things down, so that us laymen can grasp it better is really a big help too.
Thanks for the help that you have given others, (and through their questions, myself) and here's at least one guy sayin' "keep up the good work".

To which Greg's response was: Zen--thanks for the words of support/encouragement. My way of trying to help others from making the same mistakes I did starting out.

Pretty nice guy if ya ask me, of course we all have bad days. When I have a bad day I try to refrain from posting almost entirely, in the hopes that I will never offend.
I hope you guys work this little rift out and become great friends, some of the strongest friendships can be formed through opposition at the onset.

my advice would be leave them alone! those trees have been there a long time and look fantastic.of course we would all like a yamadori like these, but sometimes you have to accept that collecting from rocky areas just can't be done if you want the tree to survive. better to enjoy them as they are! there is an article on this by w.pall in the latest bonsai europe mag' . regards roy

I am not sure about John, but I know something about Harry.

He is a wonderful and giving teacher, but if you go to his home and want to buy one of his raw collected stock,..

... better keep your poker face when you hear the price. And I am not talking about world-class material, but just the average collected Cal. juniper. Of course, owning a home in Huntington Beach is not a cheap affair...

He chould choose to give his home away, like a true communist, but I'm afraid that's not going to happen.

I hear you, Greg.

It's amazing how some people demand that you give them free advice, on their terms. It' just unbelievable, and makes you wonder what the hell are you doing by spending your time with sharing your experience.

I remember spending 45 minutes writing a 1,000 word post, elaborating in detail my experience, and not even getting a "thank you" for it. It really makes you think twice about doing it ever again for free. Well, what can you do..
