JBP repot in Autumn

In this thread @ IBC Morten Albek shows a lovely little pinus parvifolia [EDIT: make that "parviFLORA"] and his work on it. (Nice tree, Morten!)

In reply #8, he talks about repotting pines in Autumn. The Wuggums-En Bonsai Garden aquired JBP stock this summer, and we are eager to look at the roots.

I'd like to hear feedback from those in the know about this idea of autumn repotting for a JBP, especially any SOB's or Morten, please.

tanx!

I find it very instructive comparing your USDA Zone and mine with your AHS Heat Zone and mine. Your extremes of weather are far more manageable than mine. I might try it on "experiment" trees and see how things go, but of course I will now have an unheated workshop to keep the trees in.

Boon repots just about everything in January, since in the Bay area, temps can hit the 80s and buds are beginning to move. They will have maybe one heavy frost day or two in the winter, then of course everything freezes solid in July! I would definitely be interested in hearing about your results!

You used the term so I'll direct this at you (poots) but anyone else in the know speak up. Is it parvifolia as you put it or parviflora? I'd love a little clarification on this (Bill V?)

ps. sorry to hijack the thread

I see it written parvifolia all the time, but only the academic looking pages have it listed as parviflora so I had my doubts. Maybe now I have a cause for which to champion... hehe.

For what its worth, I inquired about a month or so ago about repotting a nursery JBP this fall and was told resoundingly to wait til the spring. I have no other experience with JBP repotting than what I've told you though.

You can pot in fall, but in my opinion it is better to repot in spring. With fall repotting, you have to protect it from any frosts, and the tree does not seem to respond as well. When I repot in spring, the tree doesn't seem to miss a beat. In the few fall repotted JBP I've seen, they seem to be sluggish the next spring - may be my imagination, or may be just the small sample size of the observation. But I wouldn't risk my best trees on it. So unless there is an imminant reason to repot in fall, I'd wait.

I think it also depends on if you are doing root pruning or not. At brent's we repot alot of things year round, as long as we don't cut back the roots, and provide proper aftercare, they do ok.

No problems here repotting in fall but I don't have the winters most of you have and I don't do any heavy root pruning, just "look see" and clean up, that's about it.

Thank you all.

I'm contemplating heavy pruning, so I take it spring is still best
