Well...I tried pulling needles. Two things happened. One...just the needle pulls out leaving sheath behind still fastened with branch. Two...needle pulls out and sheath as well. Some times...most the time sheath is naked but also may have bud attached.

Kong, practice and pull the direction of the growth. Take the sheath. I wish I could be there standing behind you with a club to conk you on the head when you do it wrong, then you would learn (that is Boon's secret way of training primitives like me). John

Yes, pull the sheath as well. I will ignore the comments of those who know little and spend much time on computer, playing around and masticating.

Thumbs up

Thank you. John reminds me of my daughter. I ask her how to use the cell phone she gave me and she gets a look on her face and then wants to hit me with it. LOL

Nishiki JBP seem to be contrary to that. I have learned to pull the needles in the opposite direction of growth (that took some self learning). If you pull in the direction of the growth sometimes the sheath remains, sometimes the needles break off just above the sheath (doh!) or sometimes the bark tears with the needle sheath, especially if it's young bark.

The awkward part is remembering which way to pull after the season of not plucking. I usually just work my way down the benches which have a random mixture of nishiki and regular pines. It always starts with an "oops" moment. I have been considering a tattoo on my forearm to remind me.

I agree. Pull JBP needles, and cut Ponderosa. Keep your scissors sharp and cut close to the base.
