JBP imports from Japan
I would like to set the record straight. I've heard conflicting stories about importing JBP's from Japan. For those in the know, can JBP's still be imported straight from Japan and quarantined here in the U.S. at licensed nurserys ?

Yes - with a proper import permit and to be held in an approved and inspected facility. They would come in bare root and would be subject to testing for pests.
That is what I was told by USDA agent last year when I was considering trying to bring trees in to USA from Japan (or China or Korea too).

Check the link, and contact them. I think Brussels Nursery is a quarantine site.

Ah, no you can't import Black Pines from Japan due to viral Pine wilt. The two needle pines that are allowed in to the US are from Korea or China. There are a limited number of species that can be imported. Check with APHIS.

I agree with John. 5 needle are still permitted from Japan, but not 2 needle.

Hi,
I think the problem must be specific to black pines. Here in the UK, we can import anything except the JBP. Stephen |

Whitepine,
Can you get Akamatsu (Red Pines) via import? I am not sure if the virus under watch is found only in black pines or in both 2 needle types. John
