Japenese gardener in Central Ohio
I just moved to Columbus Ohio and was lucky enough to buy a home with a large yard with many mature trees, but unlucky in that it needs relandscaping and some loving care. *I will need to spend too much time on my new job to do the work myself, at least for a year or so, so I'm trying to find a gardener / landscaper in the area who is experienced in the Japanese style. *So far, the local nurseries haven't been able to help, but I'm hoping the folks on this board might have suggestions.
Thanks in advance. * Kelly |

Re: Japenese gardener in Central Ohio
You are very lucky indeed! I received a telephone call recently from a gentleman who had purchased a home in the area and was looking for someone to dismantle a beautiful Japanese Garden that made up the entire back and side yards of his home. There were mature pines, camellia, japanese maple and cryptomeria and a professionally made pond in concrete with huge moss encrusted boulders all over.
Somebody's life's work. This guy wanted a lawn where he could play football with his son! You might take a drive around the neighborhood and see if you can find any landscaping in a similar style that you admire and inquire as to who is doing the work. It's very easy to mess up a nice garden. We had a nice maple nearly destroyed once. Be sure to be home while the gardeners are there, at least until you develop a working relationship.

Re: Japenese gardener in Central Ohio
I know what you mean. I lived in the SF Bay area for about 10 yrs across the street from a 90 yr old gentleman with a 1-acre, who had been developing his back yard as a Japanese garden since the 50's. It was remarkable. Koi ponds, lath house for his trees, beautiful maples and pines, classic Budhist statues, etc. We became good friends; actually, he got me started with bonsai. But he passed away and the house was bought from the estate by a developer who ripped out the garder, subdivided the lot and built a 2nd house in back. There were other travesties, too, but that was the worst. It reminded me again of how temporary material things are. Oh well....

Hi Kelly,
I will email you the information of a guy who is a landscape designer and also sells Bonsai material. He designs and builds gardens and is a great guy to deal with.
