Japanese Maple Sick ? Need Advice

Hi Folks,
This tree was trimmed and repotted from a nursery pot on 1/22/04. The roots were trimed about 25% and the tree placed in the 15" X 5.5" pot. The soil is 50% forest bark, 25% pumice, and 25% pure clay cat litter (no additives). I used B-1 after the repot. On 2/10/04 after the appearance of some buds I used a 50% mixture of 20-20-20 fertilizer.
We had warm weather for about a week in the mid 60's and since has gone back to rain with highs in the upper 50's and lows in the upper 40's.
The problem: a few buds began to appear and looked OK but since have turned black and some of the smaller limbs show some die back and not much further signs of new buds.
See next pics for some close ups.

Hello,

Not sure that this is the problem here, but I would personally not fertilize until the leaves harden.

Maybe someone else can give you a more specific diagnosis.

Cheers,
Carl

Being new to Bonsai and not knowing the growth pattern for the limbs and leaves of this tree I'm not sure what the problem is.

1. Is this a normal reaction to the repot and trim or something else?
2. Should I change the soil since I have since acquired some lava rock and read Bonsaial1's soil preparation?
3. Just wait and see what happens in the next couple weeks?

I only live about an hour from bonsaial1 and ripsgreentree so you know the weather for the past couple weeks. Do you have maples that are advancing faster than this one? The trees still at the nursery are also not yet budding.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Jim

No, this is not normal. You may have fertilizer burn. How much did you use? I am not familiar with 50% mixture

Regards,

Matt

I used 1/2 strength of a 20-20-20 fertilizer.

I gathered that, but

How many milliliters, ounces, tablespoons, lbs or metric tonnes is that?

If you fertilized it like it was in the ground according to the sack of fertilizer "apply 1/4 cup of fertilizer for each inch of trunk thickness" or something like that, you may have killed it with fertilizer burn. Under that case, you should repot it immediately in a batch of fresh soil with no fertilizer whatsoever and cut back any dead roots (which will be most all of them) to green cambium, fully expecting that it is not going to succeed.

You can't fertilize bonsai like they are in-ground plants. Your root system is a volume of perhaps a gallon or two and a plant of the same size in the ground would have a root system of ten times that volume of soil (or more).

Sorry,

Matt

Jim,
I see a couple situations which don't help this problem..
kitty litter breaks down quickly, absorbs more than other high fired clay soil additives. put a small amount in a cup of water and let it sit for a week or two and see what the consistency is.. i hope not but I feel you find it a slimmy clay muck.
What size hole is in the pot the maple is in?
It looks like a garden center planter. If it is the drainage hole is way to small. I have used some of these but have had to create more of a drainage hole then the single 1/2" hole they come with.
These two possible situations and the fertilizing may be the cause for the root rot.
I'd repot as advised making sure there is good drainage in the pot. Your mix sounds ok.. kinda?.. what is forest bark?
hope we are hitting on the cause of this malady..
