Japanese Maple in regualer soil

i have a japanese maple that i have had for over a year now. It is in a 7 inch training pot, and in regular potting soil. I think the soil is staying too wet, and was going to pot it in bonsai soil, but i was wondering if it would be ok to do that now. I am not going to do any root pruning or anything like that just repot it in bonsai soil. I live in south carolina and it is very warm here right now so any advice before i do this??

You can slip it out of the pot its in and put it into another pot with bonsai soil and feel safe about it.
Set it in the shade for a couple of weeks, watch the watering to be sure it doesn't go dry.

Then get it into the normal amount of sun, usually morning sun is best for 3 to 4 hours.
