Japanese Maple Grafting Attempt

Well, I got bored today, so I decided to try my hand at grafting since I have so many seedlings from last year. And lucky you, I was bored enough to take pics of the process just in case it works out!

So first, here we get the rootstock, a Japanese Maple grown from seed last spring, which makes it one year old Looks thick enough to graft soemthing on to it...

Next is to select the scion (dormant). Since I am so in love with my Higasayama, which I got last fall, I decided to use it. I just chose a length that I liked.

Of all the grafting sites Ive checked out, they use grafting rubber or whatever, to me it looked like a rubber band you would find around broccoli or something, so since they look alike, I used just that So I tightly wrapped the rootstock and scion with a thick rubber band

Grafting

Some suggestions. First a grafting knife that is sharper than a rasor. Second it is important to line up the cambiam layer. Third the rubber is just to keep preasure on the graft long enough for the graft to take. The bottom heat looks good and the plastic cover will help also. Keep moist but not wet, look for the sion to start growing and harden off slowly.
