Japanese Maple 'deshojo' defoliation
Hi all -
Any opinions on defoliating Japanese Maples two summers in a row? They are very healthy, and the leaf size is good - but I find it difficult to resist the opportunity to refresh those greening leaves. I have read that this is not a technique to use two seasons in a row, but I was curious about other's experience out there. Thanks in advance.

Tom,
be very careful with this variety. It is quite weak, much weaker than the green ones. I have given up defoliating this variety totally. I would never ever defoliate it two summers in a row. You risk loss of many branchlets, some branches or even the whole tree.

Tom,
I only have the one "Deshojo" and defoliated it last summer (about this time). The display this year has been very poor, compared to how it was. It is still fairly healthy, but I think, although the leaf size has reduced, it is still not a patch on what it was. I think this has been put back at least two years by the process. We had a particularly wet summer in the U.K. last year, and this did not help. If you decide to do it, please only once and then ONLY if it is extremely healthy and you can monitor it well the rest of this year. Walters experience with them should be heeded perhaps. Good luck, Ian. |

I have a Japanise maple that I am also considering defoliating. I want the lower branches to thicken up, is the best way of doing this just defoliating the top half, to allow more light to reach the lower branches?

I will be heeding the advice given, and will not be defoliating my deshojo forest this year
Quote:
And, yes, defoliation is one method to redirect a tree's energy. If done correctly on a healthy tree it can: - accelerate the ramification of the tree in general - strengthen a weak branch - defoliate the whole tree minus that branch - weaken a strong branch- defoliate that branch - equalize the strength of branche - remove the large leaves from the strong branches and the apex. - strengthen the inner shoots - remove the large leaves from the entire tree - reduce leaf size - defoliate the whole tree Source: Bonsai Today, #19
