Japanese Maple Airlayer

ok, im fixing to try my first airlayer... a jpanese maple in the front yard, i have "canadian spagnum peat moss" is that right?... ill be starting it in about 2 weeks

What you need is sphagnum moss. It's the long fiber moss just as it grows. The peat moss is what it turns into after it has composted in the peat bogs. You should be able to find it at a real nursery. Sometimes it's available at craft stores.

I wouldn't say it won't work but I think it will be less successful on average than the moss. The thing about the moss is it will hold alot of water but still stays kind of fluffy so oxygen can get to the roots. If I was going to use peat moss I would mix it with coarse sand and use a regular nursery pot wraped around the branch and leave the top open. You'll probably have to water daily through the summer but it will get oxygen that way. If you just put peat moss in a plastic bag I'm afraid it might turn into a moldy mess.
