It isn't writing Japanese as JapANESE. You had written "Jap" a few times and this was corrected, as it is considered by some to be a racial slur.

Concerning the tree - it would be premature to do anything with it other than let it grow, if your dog will let it. At some point in the future, you might prune it back to the first branch on the right.

Regarding other forums, there is a list available on our bonsaiTALK Links page. It is probably unreasonable to expect you would get meaningful responses within four hours.

Good luck,

Matt

thanks for the info, i was thinkng of putting it in a large pot. maybe 60 centimeters in diameter. it should have plenty of room in it, and i can sav it from the dog. im gonna wait till late autumn till i do it though. and also i will be air layering a branch of my main maple tree. oh and about the heading, i never meant any disrespect, after a fellow forum memeber corrected my i changed it. as of now ive decided to be more patient with responses. im used to a forum where replies are within 30 mins of posting at max.

I planted Japanese maples in the ground about 3 years ago now and basically left them there to grow. They started off double the thickness of what your tree is now. In 3 years their trunks have grown at least 4 to 5 times when I started. So my advice to you is if you want a large trunk then leave it in the ground and forget about it for 3-5 years. Try and keep the dog away from it though.

I'm a bit confused. All my maples are in full leaf and won't be dropping their leaves until at the earliest April/May. I wouldn't worry about the ealry layer for at least another year yet. Maples do a bit of both shade and sunny conditions to do well.

Well that makes a huge difference. The large 20 yr old maple you would probably think about trying to take a lot more than just one air layer. I would try at least 10 on a large tree. Look for interesting branches and try different thickness of branches.
