Is it Japanese Elm?
I just bought a tree in bonsai show. It's labeled as Japanese Elm. After searching the internet for more information, I came to conclusion that it 's not a Japanese Elm (Zelkova serrata)
![]() It has groups of leaves. Each group has 3 or 7 leaves (picture). Each leaf is about 1 in long and 1/2 in wide with toothed margin. The upper surface of leaf has dark green and lower surface has light green. 2 groups of leaves are opposite each other and other groups of leaves emerged from the branch with rectangle direction compared with their neighbor (like Japanese maple or pomegranate way). And the new branches will emerge from the base of the groups of leaves (picture) What tree do you think? Thanks. Bonhe |

Looks a lot more like a holly to me, though which one I won't guess at. Elms have evenly toothed edges, not the slight scoops and points your tree seems to have (and which are definite holly traits).

It almost looks like a Birch.

Definitely not an elm of any sort. The leaves on your specimen are opposite and leaves on elms are alternate.

Hi Cathie, you said Holly (Ilex) or holly oak (Quercus ilex)? I don't think it is oak since oak will have alternate leaves.
Hi Constantstaticx, Birch also has alternate leaves. Hi JayC, I agree with you. What is the plant? Bonhe |

Hi Bonhe, I think what you are describing as "groups of leaves" are called coumpond leaves. Your picture is not so good! I would look up trees with compound leaves. I think this could be an Ash tree, like a Blue Ash. In any case. these leaves are not suitable for making bonsai, unless you want to aim for a really big bonsai. I hope you didn't pay too much for it. I am surprised someone at a bonsai show would mislabel such a tree for sale like this. Good luck!

Yeah, Si. I was heading toward compound as well. Ash came to mind, as did Hickory. Maybe Pecan?

Thanks Si~ and BunjinEnt.
I paid $35 for the tree potted in a very nice pot. The tree is an informal upright (I will post its picture when I get a new digital camera - my current one some how got a problem: you see many paralell lines across the frame!? or I have to use my Leica M3, this way, will take longer to have a picture ;-)). Think about the cost of the pot is about $30, so the tree itself costs only $5. Too cheap, right? I will bring my tree to Mr. Ota this Saturday for more information. I'll update. Bonhe |
