Japanese Black Pine (nursery stock)
I've been visiting local landscape nurseries, and I found one that has about a dozen Japanese Black Pines that are between 5-7 feet tall. They want $45 dollars for them. I've photographed two of them, and labeled the pictures A and B. I'm new to bonsai, and I'm not sure about the potential of these specimens. Please have a look at the pictures and tell me if these are good prospects.

this nursery is way out in the boondocks, I think the guy buys stock from department/home improvement stores, because many of the pots have a "Home Depot" sticker on them.
Yeah $45 bucks |

Before you go and buy landscape nursery black pines, you should know you are getting yourself into a lot of work for these guys. Brent Walston had some excellent articles discussing Black Pines on his blog, and specifically this article:
Raw Material: Pines, September 2005 http://bonsainurseryman.typepad.com/bonsainurseryman/ It is well worth reading before you decide you want to purchase landscape trees for bonsai. While pre-trained black pines from a bonsai nursery are a far more expensive, they could save you years in development over landscape pines.

Ralph,
I mean no disrespect but... I have seen so called pre-trained black pines at nurseries for hundreds of dollars that are crap. These trees have alot of potential because they have lots of low branches, and even if he kills them for $45 it was a learning experience. Better to kill a $45 tree than a $250 "pre-bonsai". And the experience he would gain in training these trees to bonsai is priceless |
