Dear All-
I promised to give you all some feedback as well as upload some photos that I took at Jade Gardens in Wimberly, Texas this weekend (southwest of Austin). First of all, I was amazed at the variety of trees as well as the variety of styles of bonsai. From Texas oak to Bouganvilla to Japanese Maple...this place is a site to see. In fact, I was surprised and shocked to see Japanese Maples thriving in the central Texas climate. It goes to show you that many so-called experts who say that something can or cannot be done are sometimes wrong! Mr. Chuck Ware and his wife were very helpful to point out that they have had this bonsai exhibit for about 24 years (since 1980) and that they have worked very hard to make it worth while. Mr. Ware was also very helpful about suggestions and things to remember for an individual like myself who is getting back into the hobby. Mr. ware stressed the essentials: 1) know the horticulture of your tree(soil needs, light and temperature), 2) know the zone you live in, and 3) know the style that you think will work best for your particular tree. He told me that each tree is specific - just like a person. Once you get to know the tree, then you can know its needs. I have never been so amazed and shocked at the beauty of many of his specimens. I have to say though that a few of his trees may not be ready for public viewing since they do not posess the smooth transitions from base root to bough to branch to leaf (some look like they are regular trees that have been cut back and placed in pots). Yet, if this is what you like, he has plenty. But, other than a few that need a little work, I was simply amazed. Mr. Ware is truly a Bonsai Master! Mr. Ware and his wife also have a large group of bonsai stock as well as many materials which one can purchase such as pots and books and wire. I don't want to sound like a marketer but he had a ton of stuff! So, if you are ever in Austin or San Antonio, you really need to make the trek over to Wimberly and see this exhibit. My wife commented that it was better than going to a natural history museum! I am going to have to shrink some of my pics down in order to attach them. I will upload them to the Gallery section soon. -Davinci7_gis |

I too knew you would enjoy your visit...I am fortunate to live within reasonable driving distance of such a wonderful exhibit, with two great people running it...our club usually has the pleasure of a demo or two from the Ware's each year...this is also quite a fun and educational experience... BTW...the pic labeled as 'weeping' is one of the finest Bald Cypress bonsai examples I have ever seen, in my opinion... I will try to add a couple photos of Chuck's rock plantings from our May club meeting to this thread later this evening... Thanks for sharing... Regards Behr ![]() |
