Since jade are tropicals then it means that you are in a tropical environment if the tree were to survive the "winter". You can dig it anytime you want.

Jades are very hardy trees, we’ve had one growing in a pot here at our house and its never been repotted and it neglected a lot but its still alive I think if you dug it out of the ground at the moment it wouldn’t stress too much but I am definitely no expert I just know that jades are pretty hard to kill. Think hard before taking my advice and maybe wait foe some other replies before digging it up and transplanting.

I remember seeing a small jade popping up out of the pot a while back from underneath one of the other ones in a pot I might go have a look and see if its still alive.

Hey there spoon,
My first experience was with a rather large jade. When I bought it, it was about a foot and a half high from the top of the five gallon pot and maybe 2-3 feet wide in foliage. I reduced the top severely and also severly root prooned it almost to the point of no roots. That was nearly 2 summers ago (I live in Florida, USA) and it has been neglected ever since. And, surprisingly enough it is thriving. Hope this helps to give you some confidence in digging it up.

P.S.-I haven't tried to style it for bonsai--just let'n it grow!

I don't keep tropicals or anything that can't stand our severe N Fla . winters , And I've never kept jade, but when I lived in South Fla.( Zone 10) , We allways repotted and dug tropicals, Ficus, Bougenvilla, ect, in the summer. I don't know if this is the only way, it's just the way the( for real ) tropical experts down there advised . Since tropicals don't go dormant, winter is their weakest time. I don't think you could go wrong waiting for summer. Good Luck Blue.

As long as it stays warm you can dig it up.
After that you need to let is stay dry for about 3 weeks before you water it. This will give the roots time to callus over and it will prevent the roots from rotting.

In Melbourne they are impossible to kill. Dig up when it gets a bit warmer though. You could dig it up know and it will survive but wait until spring to dig it up to be safe.
