Interesting Tid-bit
My Mother-in-law is a member of just about every conservation group there is. Well maybe not Greenpeace. She doesn't much care for them. Too aggressive even for her. ;o)
Her mail always has a bunch of newsletters in it from all those conservation groups. Occasionally I will pick up one and read all about what the "tree nuts" are up to. Sometimes there is a few good tid-bits of information in those newsletters. The one I grabbed today was put out by the World Wildlife Fund. ( a good organization in my opinion ) There was an article in it about all the wildfires that are plaguing the forest these days. The usual stuff was there. How the fires are actually good for the forest. Especially the pines. etc. Logdepole pines and Tory pines, among others are depend on those fires for germination of their seeds. The one fact that struck caught my fancy in the article was on the Ponderosa pines. Old ponderosa's have a bark that actually insulates better than asbestos. Go figure ! An interesting bit of info. Maybe that is one of the reasons they live so long. |

Pretty cool... Let's just hope industrial applications for fire resistant material dont start to harvest old growth Ponderosa for their bark! Adam |

Ron, I've contacted the HazMat authorities and they will have an asbestos abatement team out there in the woods shortly. The plan is to strip all the bark and replace it with fire-retardant OSHA-approved polyurethane foam. From a distance you can hardly tell it isn't bark.
This should keep the trunks insulated and in good shape until they all get chopped down under some Government land swap program. Thanks for your vigilance! Regards, HazMatt

West Nile disease was traced back to the water on a shipment of the twisty lucky bamboo that is all the rage.
Finally made it to our neck of the woods. Two dead birds found, infected and a man in Clovis died this past weekend. Only 54 years old. Mesquitoes around the area have tested positive also. I'm getting me one of those electronic bug zappers and plugging it into 220! ![]()

West Nile seems to be on the decline here. at least no new cases have been reported for a while. Good luck with the bug zapper. When placed right they do wonders. Problem is that most people put them real close to the house. Almost at the back door and too close to their outside setting area. They do work there. The mosquitoes are attracted to it and it does kill them but on their way to commit suicide they always stop by you for a last meal. The area immediately around the zapper is usually infested with the little buggers just waiting their turn to die. Try putting the zapper at least 20 feet from where you want to be. The bugs will congregate over there and you will be a bit more comfortable. Wearing dark clothes seems to also attract them. Light colored clothes will help keep them at bay. |
