A Question...
I've been trying to find good info on care and pruning of Japanese Black Pines, but most of what I read doesn't have step by step diagrams. Candle pruning is described, but there has been little attention given to the older needles and branch structure. I've seen finished trees pictured, but nothing showing the actual tree in stages of training. Anyone know of any good books or web sites with more detailed info?

Splinter,
The periodical, Bonsai Today has many such articles, as does International Bonsai magazine. There is a 3-part series in TBE Journal that has detailed information and photos/illustrations for such sequences. www.stonelantern.com www.internationalbonsai.com www.bonsaienthusiast.com Kind regards, Andy Rutledge b u n j i n | d e s i g n :: www.bunjindesign.com zone 8, Texas |

There's even an illustrated article called "Black Pine Ramification" by that Andy Rutledge guy!
You can find that and some other info over at bonsaiTALK Links if you search on BLACK PINE. Andy's article is toward the bottom, and a couple by Brent Walston.Regards, Matt

Andy and Matt...
Thanks for your help! I have checked out the links, and subscribed to TBE. There's a lot of helpful information - it makes me realize how much more I have to learn! Hopefully I haven't already done anything adverse to the black pine that I've recently started working on. I appreciate the info. |

I removed some needles and wired a few lower branches. I thought I had seen it done in some illustrations before. (The needle removal, that is.) I've attached a pic of it - any input is appreciated. I've thought about cutting the tree at the defined bend, next year.
