Give them as close to an environment they would have if they were outdoors. Sunshine being key then, specific care for the individual species....etc.

Since you are in Alabama, I would keep them outdoors barring any frost or freak snowstorms.

The ivy, I would clip that sucker back alot. A friend of mine has one, and in its early development, just clipped it back to the first two sets every couple weeks. The growth, and trunk was splendid. He did have it in a regular nursery pot for the interim while growing it out.

Personally, I would hesitate to keep any of those inside. Unless, like Paul says, you can keep the humidity way up, lots of light, and mimic outdoor temps, they won't do well. Stick to stuff like ficus, shefflaras, fukien teas, etc for inside.

Stephen, regarding the azalea. If I am correct there are several 'types' of azalea. Some require a winter out for dormancy, these are usually the ones you find in your local garden center. Then there are the Japanese varieties, these will die if allow to receive the low temps in my area. Check what type you have and treat it with the proper winter care. Not all types will like being inside for the winter!
