Ilex table showing what berries look like for each
Brent,
This PDF file from the University of Florida has a listing of many ilex (species and cultivars-- about 30) on page 4, 5 and 6. It shows what the berries look like for each one. The berries can be red, bright red, dark red, yellow, bright yellow, or black depending on the species/cultivar. |

As I understand, in regards to hollies in general, there are some cultivars that are self-fertile, but very few are and those that are produce many more berries when a male is present. That is a problem with dioecious species...
Now, I don't know if serrata are parthenocarpic, but I would be more pessimistic than optimistic since almost every cultivar of serrata or verticillata I've seen in magazines states that a specific male tree is needed to pollinate it. |
