Identify me please.....

I found this tree at a Nursery and the lady that worked there with the bonsais was on vacation, so I don't know what kind of tree or how much it was, The tree is about 13" tall with red/burgandy leaves. Can anyone tell me what kind of tree, and how much would I expect to pay for something like this!!Approximately. Thanks!!

I had a pretty hard time distinguishing the shape of the leaves but I'd say it looks a bit like nandina (which is actually a bamboo.) < edit No its not. Its called Heavenly Bamboo though. > The general lack of branching supports this but I'm nowhere near certain.

In my view it is not without interest, but without knowing the species (and therefore not knowing the characteristics of the plant), I'd be unwilling to take a flyer on it. Descrimination differentiates the collector from the artist.

Edit: Oh, JB, where in Texas are you? I'd be interested in checking out that nursery myself if it is within driving distance of where I am. I'm not aware of many nurseries that have a reliable bonsai culture where I live. I'd also be real surprised if that was only $20. Whether a good OR bad tree, anything in a bonsai pot that I've seen seems to take the price up to $40 or more. Like the pot or the word bonsai makes it exotic or something.

The link is to a google site, and is a photo of nandina, which is what your plant resembles. One of the varieties of nandina is nandina domestica, common name, Heavenly Bamboo. However, it isn't a member of the bamboo family.

Yes, definitely nandina. Probably a dwarf variety. --Jim

I WOULD RUN-- NOT WALK--TO ANOTHER NURSERY IMMEDIATELY. You are about to be ripped off. This plant (and the others you have posted) is stressed out (it is most likely nandina) It's roots are a mess, the soil is basically mud. The people there have no idea what they're doing, the person that does is out of town...The plants aren't marked. The attitude towards customers is pretty bad too.

PUT ON YOUR SAILING SHOES friend and find somewhere else to shop. THis place doesn't deserve (or serve) you. This thing will die the minute it leaves the shop--if it isn't dead already.

Well...I guess my delima is that this is pretty much the ONLY place I have found in San Antonio that has Bonsai. I'm unfortunately on a budget and can't afford the 65-100 that alot of the online shops ask!! Ho-Hum!

Do more checking around and research before you buy anything Talk with the local bonsai club, for starters.

http://www.absbonsai.org/USAClubs.html#TX

There are clubs in Austin and in San Antonio. Either will know where the best places to look in the area, or may be able to put you onto a member who sells off old stock. If you're lucky, one or the other will be having a club auction soon. That's a rterrific place to get spectacular bargains on quality starter material. I know there are some reasonably priced, extremely good sources of quality bonsai down that way.
