First off - welcome! Secondly, we all thank your husband for his service to our country.

Please fill in your profile so that we know where you are located and what your growing conditions might be. Also, what kind of trees are we talking about here. It'll be tough for any one to help out if we don't know what trees you have.

Lyn, I know from experience that this is a very difficult situation for what are outdoor plants in an indoor environment. I think you can manage in the summer with the bonsai in front of an open window 24 hours a day. However, the winter becomes difficult. The hot, dry indoor air in winter is hard on the bonsai. BTW, the common name for your bonsai is Japanese Garden Juniper. They are excellent species for bonsai but are not, sorry to say, indoor plants.
I'm attaching a link to a site written by a very expert bonsai man and horticulturist. Read it and see if you can take his advice, and I wish you, and of course your husband the best of luck, and I hope he is home soon.
Regards
Mike Page in California.

Lynkxs2 - Good advice and link from mike_p Best of luck with the tree. I'm sure we all will hold good thoughts for your husband.

I know exactly what you mean by a NYC hot summer - I'm originally from Brooklyn - I feel your pain!

Unhappy :'(

Aww Mike... thnkx hun... Maybe I can should just send them off to Mom's in Fl..
I love tree's and i hate when I see one chopped down. I'm so sad is there anything else I can do? Should I send it to a nursery for proper care?
My husband sent it to me. I want to take care of it, I want to make sure it lives so we can have it in the back yard when he gets home.

Lyn, my heart goes out to you. I wish there was an easy answer. A nursery may be one way. Another way may be the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. They have a large bonsai section there. Why not give them a call, and explain the situation to them. The worst they can do is say no.
If all else fails and you could send it to me, I would be proud and happy to care for it, and return it when the time is right.
Is there a tag on it? I used to consult with a large wholesale nursery concerning their bonsai products. They are located in Half Moon Bay, CA. It would be quite a coincidence if it came from them.
Let me know. I'll help any way I can

Mike

Hi Lynx. I believe the backyard would be the place to keep it. Also, I would recommend finding someone in your area, (a club, bonsai farm, ect) to show you how to water, fertilize, ect. I killed the first tree I had by following advice from people with no experience with trees. Don't overwater!! Thank you to both you and your husband and I hope he makes it home soon. John

Mike: That is so kind of you.. Yes i'd send both babies to you.
(No, sadly i see no tag) Thanks for the link....

Pill man: Thankx for your advise... you rule!!! Thank U!! (Brooklyn is always in the house)

Splinter- Yes it would be the ideal place. but i don't have a back yard yet till he gets home. ( I'LL BE IN VA by next May) i guess a better place for the dormant stage & not to drasticaly cold...

Mike: I am so sad.. I have to send them off before they die. I will make sure they make it.
( be ready if they say NO)
I don't want these innocent babies to die for lack of care or knowledge. I will do my best to get the best care for them.

YOU GUY's RULE AND THANK YOU so so so much...

ANYTHING I SHOULD KNOW FOR NOW?... I DON'T EVEN KNOW HOW TO PINCH...
I don't want to weaken the Babies. :*(

To all: My Tom appeciates the love you all extend- and sends his love!!!
