HUGE bug in my tree!!!!

. . . and its a praying mantis!

I found this guy a few weeks ago in my laceleaf maple when he was about 1" long. I haven't seen him for several weeks until today when I spotted him again. Now he's about 2-1/2" to 3". Here's a couple pictures I snapped this morning . . . .

Cool - they are not native to your area, are they ? I have read that they can get this far north in a warm spring/summer. I had one for a "pet" once, very interesting creatures.

If you aren't familiar with them, you'll also be quite surprised the first time you see one fly away. Or at least I was. Pretty much like a big grasshopper.

Definitely a Praying Mantis. He'll eat the bad bugs so let him be.

You are possibly thinking of Black Widow spiders. Mantis die shortly after laying their eggs. They are also an aphid eating machine!

Unless I'm mistaken, I think 'he' is a 'she'. I believe the females are green and the males are a light tan.

Most lady mantis eats the head of man mantis during the act of "you know what".
