The proper way to cauterize a ficus wound would be to use a glowing red knife from the fire to make your cuts....sorry...just joking...

A few already mentioned water.
This is the most common way to stop the milky white sap instantly...spritz it with a water sprayer. Whenever I do a ficus workshop ( anykind) I have a spritzer for people to use, especially if making large trunk or branch cuts so the sap doesn't just keep running down the trunk and they get it all over their hands. In October while staying with friends in Miami (while doing their show) I decided to get to work on this huge Ficus Benj. that my friend Al bought many years ago ( 12 I think he said) and just set on a shelf in garden until roots dropped down and grew down into ground and got as big as a golf ball while it sat on the bench. I wanted to do some work for them to thank them. . No before pics but this is after removing more than half the tree in first go-around. We spritzed cuts, then sealed with an Azalea sealer he wanted to use, the next day, after the azalea sealer was dry, we sealed with putty. Reports are, no branches died and it's filling out. After repotting into a bonsai pot (smaller!) next year I think it will be on it's way! Regards, Dale
