I was about 20 when I saw a gardening show where they were potting up and wiring some junipers.

I immediately ran out to the local nursery...bought two junipers and that Sunset book then proceeded to basically destroy the junipers. 1 died quickly and 1 lived for many years but never looked quite right.

I've learned that the art of bonsai requires a lot of patience. I'm 44 now and still working on the patience thing!

Patience is required only when you are doing something you do not enjoy.

Think about it do you need patience ? when you are!!!

How old????

I was just under 20, newly married.... Always had a facination for things Asian....art, gardening, etc...... I am 55 now. Still have the bonsai thing going on. Mostly San Jose' junipers but also, two varieties of malpiggiahs. I have been meaning to post some pics. Spring is here and the flowers are just around the corner....will post soon.

I started at about 15-16 and through high school. Then I went to college (Georgia Tech) and never got back into it until I graduated. As soon as I got my own place, I jumped right back in. That has been about 5 years. While in college, I did manage to keep the ugliest fukien tea ever alive, but that was it and that poor thing struggled with dorm/apartment living. It finally died once I gave it proper treatment, go figure....

I started collecting trees with the intension of producing bonsai when I was 14, now I'm 17. However, I've been interested in them since I can remember.

In the under 10 category, not truly bonsai, but my Mum and I built a miniature garden, with a spreading dwarf cotoneaster horizontalis as the centrepiece. We had lovely fun finding the tiniest plants to fill the little garden. My dolls had the best garden parties!
It took till this year to get into bonsai properly, now I have a shadehouse that I can reliably water and check daily. That never happened in the career years! And in Australian midsummer, any potplant which wasn't watered today is DEAD.
