Maybe not but from your picture in the forum you look experienced. Besides you dont have to be able to paint to hold an art show..

I received word from the club secretary that I had been nominated for the position of director-at-large. I don't get it. I'm not that experienced and I'm not that large.

Hi Dale, I to belong to the PBA collective and have the experienced this with duties as educational VP for PBA and president of Bowie the club. The best way I can comment on your statement is:

Your a warm body at the right place and time. The selection process is much a kin to that of a Hawk and a field mouse.

Actively involved at age 34. Was given first malsai age 32 (and killed it). Bought first Bonsai Book age 28. Other forms of horticulture age 5. Kids are kind of into it. Trees grow too slowly. 4 year old likes to help more than 11 year old.

Well the first time I became intrigued with bonsai, I was 30 and tried one of those bonsai kits which was a miserable failure. Some twenty years later I saw a bonsai show and decided to try for real.
I played with the wild Elms and Mulberry trees in the yard while reading everything I could.
Then got serious, took classes and watched some masters do their thing and here I am running a bonsai store and teaching. Whoda thunkit?
Sure wish I would have started twenty years earlier.

I started at 29 and feel fortunate I started when I did. School was out of the way, had a job I liked and some extra money to spend on books and pots. I work at home, which is an advantage in many ways. I can keep an eye on things all day long and this really makes a difference for me. A lot of the problems I see people posting about could be remedied if they were home to see what's going on in their yard. Could be why bonsai is appealing to others like myself or those that are retired

Started at 27, am 29 now,...and we'll have to wait and see how long it takes before I stop killing trees.

Discovered Bonsai in Montreal in the early '70s in my early 20s and added it to my must-do-this-life list. Finally got around to it last fall at 56.

I am enjoying the immensly overwhelming challenge before me!!!

I was interested in bonsai since I was a youngster, tried a couple of times but the absentmindedness of youth caused me to kill the trees. Then I tried again when I was a Navy wife on base, with a young child, but a few days of neglect and those trees, too, died. I found a Polaroid of them recently, and boy were they ugly-fuggly!

Now I'm in my mid forties, and have been working hard at the art for a little over two years. Very involved in two clubs, reading a LOT, have a lot of trees (some quite nice) and work every Wednesday for a man whose collection is extensive and excellent. It's amazing how much farther you can progress when you have quality material to work with!
