How Do You Regrow Branches?

Hi everybody, I was looking for articles on how to "regrow" branches, and didn't find any. Can someone tell me how to "regrow" branches? I have a ficus that I would like to try growing branches on.

I have also seen photos of stumps that have grown new shoots, and several years later, have nice branches. How do you get a stump to produce new shoots, or does it do it automatically once you fertilize, water, etc...?

Thanks for your help.

Every species is different, and the plants that are classified as shrubs or used for hedging are the easiest branchers (azalea, privet, olive, pomegranate, etc, even trees like oak and redwood are sometimes seen as hedges because they bud back so easily). Most young trees bud and branch, with ease but they may lose this ability to some degree as they age, particularly as bark develops on the trunk. Trees that have been cut back radically have an incentive to develop new branches or perish - the act of trimming back a plant can encourage branching by removing the source of auxins that inhibit bud development, so tip pruning a tree can help encourage branches to develop.

GRAFTING

Most any plant will throw off branches at a node, which is the joint in the stem where you typically see leaves develop. If you want to develop a branch between nodes or on trunks that are mature or corked over with bark, it is sometimes necessary to graft one on. Thread grafting is a relatively easy way to start a branch. You can find more information here:

Matt
