How can I bend thick trunks?
I have purchesed a new tree. Sadly it has a straight trunk (about 10" long) after some nice bends. I have received suggestions on my sweidish bonsai site, that the trunk is unbendeble and that I should cut it at the beginning of the straight part and start over with a new top. Have anyone of managed to bend a 1.5 inch thick trunk on ficus retusa? (or other trees with leaves for that matter)

I have managed to do so, but I was only intending to bend the branch downwards. I believe you are trying to put movement in the trunk. This would be a little more difficult. A photo would help people give better suggestions.

You can bend this thickness with saw cuts removing a wedge of trunk. This may need to be done several areas to get several good bends.
See my article at http://www.bonsaihunk.8m.com/HeavyBranches.html Hope this helps. Jerry

I agree with Jerry, the wedge cutting method is the quickest and best method but without seeing the tree it is impossible to tell you if you need more than one cut to get the jub done.

Martin,
Your tree is not only straight but there are no branches in that long straight segment. You will need to graft some branches in there to use that segment effectively. Jerry

Hey Jerry I just read that neat article, looks good! I would imagine a lot of swelling in the area tho in later years, but I suppose it depends on the species(you mention that hornbeam and maple scar for a long time and are really unsuitable).
Any articles on there regarding growing a new nebari on a sgaeretia? ![]()

Ye I known, but I have to try and bend it first before I "waste" on grafting branches on the trunk. But there are some "useless" branches in the top I can use for that purpose.
I´m thinkning of doing some wedges with a saw, then use the jack to bend the trunk and hold it together while the cuts heals. I think 3 cuts will do it. One in the middle of the jack and the other two at 1-1,5" from the 1:st on both sides. |
