hoping to lauch a bonsai website... help needed
Ok well I recently had the opportunity to purchase multiple websites with the upgrade of my personal business one. One of these happens to be www.southeasttexasyamadori.moonfruit.com (it will lose the .moonfuit part in a week or two when I buy a real domain).
What I need help with is pictures and articles concerning specific species. I need permission to use pictures of individual trees and permission to use articles on species specific care. Any help is very much appreciated and in exchange for pictures or articles, I am willing to add a link your personal or business website and cite you as creator/owner of trees. It's not much but it's all I can do. Southeast Texas bonsai enthusiasm is a bit lacking, especially after the last hurricane (Rita) which, hear tell, has destroyed quite a few collections. The main goal of the website is to encourage local enthusiasts to grow native species and raise awareness about many of the species that may be overlooked by the local artist. Sparkleberry, Chinaberry, Willow Oak, Dogwood, and American Holly are a few of the species that grow plentifully around here but is lesser known locally as bonsai-able. You don't have to be from the area to submit pictures or articles, but if you are in the area I suggest you check it out! Keep in mind that the site is very new but I hope to be able to expand it over the course of the next year until I have the opportunity to renew the website or delete it. If I can grow the website and have some success at obtaining (mainly picture) resources then I will gladly renew it for another year. These are the trees that I am requesting information on: Sweetgum (Liquidambar styraciflua) American Hornbeam (Carpinus caroliniana) Eastern Red Cedar (Juniperus virginiana) Yaupon Holly (Ilex vomitoria) European Hophornbeam (Ostrya virginiana) Pin Oak (Quercus palustris) Willow Oak (Quercus phallos) Red Swamp Maple (Acer rubrum 'drumondii') Chinaberry (Erythrina corallodendrum) Sparkleberry (Vaccinium arboreum) Cork Elm/Winged Elm (Ulmus neri) Pine (Ponderosa, Loblolly) Bald Cypress (Taxodium distichum) American Holly (Ilex opaca) Dogwood (Cornus) Beech (Fagus) Any locals are also more than welcome to add a suitable species to the list. Thanks in advance for any help with this project and let me know what you think. Craig |

Sorry no pics, as yet, but I noticed that you do not have ligustrum in your list.
Does it not grow there? If it does it should definitely be added, as it deserves more widespread use as a bonsai material. I will try and get you an article with pics together sometime over the coming growing season, as to some of the techniques that can be used to great effect on this species.

Hmmm... it's hard to get people to write articles for a website. If I write an article, I'm more likely to put it up here, where I spend a lot of time, that's just human nature.
And getting people to send pictures of their trees is hard, too. There aren't a lot of people, comparitively speaking, who feel confident enough about their pictures, so they aren't likely to share.Maybe if you go to your next local show, and take pictures, the members will give you permission to use those pictures? They are more likely to look at your website if their trees are showcased. Joanie

People want their articles to be seen. When I write an article, I put it up on my own website. I also post here, and some on Internet Bonsai Club. Most of what you are asking for is already available on the web in other more accessible venues.
My suggestion is to work with your local club and find qualified people who grow those species. Then interview them, photograph them working on the trees, etc. Go to shows and photograph good examples of trees. Write up the exhibit. I guess my main point would be that it is far too easy for anyone in the world to put up a website, beg for other peoples' work, and expect to be hailed as an expert. We already have a couple of those. I'm not saying that is you, please understand. But you may need to build a foundation of your own work before others will make submissions to it. |
