Hokkaido Elm Info

Hello all,
I am thinking of getting a Hokkaido Elm.
I have seen them listed as hardy from zones 4-9.
I am in zone 4/5
Just wondering if this is true and the tree is indeed hardy here in WI.
I have heard of club members wintering them in thier basement under lights.
I want to keep it in my new hoop house.
thanks
-Paul

Seeing as these trees originate from the northern island of Hokkaido, (duh) where the weather is really cold I don't see a problem with a hoop house.
The smallest leaves in the plant kingdom and in time the bark gets deeply fissured.

Midwest . . . the seiju that I got from eBay is being overwintered indoors (sort of). Its being kept in a greenhouse that is maintained at 45F for the duration of the winter. To be honest, I feel that this is a bit over protective, but since this tree came to me from much warmer climates I felt it necessary. However, in the future, this tree will be cared for just as any other deciduous in my area (i.e. unheated garage).

Basically what I am saying in a lot more words than necessary is that yes . . . your hoop house should be just fine so long as the tree is coming from a comparable climate.

It has been suggested to me that Seiju are hardy between zone 3 through 10. Apparantly they are quite adaptable and capable of being overwintered indoor's without complication. They may lose some foliage (about 1/3 or so) but leaf right back out in spring.

I don't know if the same can be said of Hokkaido . . .

Bruce,
I have been told that the Hokkaido Elm was not infact from the island of Hokkaido, but discovered by a Mr. Hokkaido.
