Hey all,
As I started to bring out my plants from hibernation I noticed that two of my best azaleas had dryed crackly leaves on them. When I broke off a few twigs, there was a lot of green so I have some hope, but what should I do? I have watered and misted. Should I cut off the dry dead foliage? Or should I let the tree to it by itself? Anybody else have this happen to them? The weather is starting to warm up, in the 50-70's during the day. I try to let them get some morning sun, but afternoon shade. Any ideas. Rob |

Rob,
I also had this with my azalea that I have. It recently started getting a lot of brown funky looking leaves. It was in need of some new soil so I started by repotting it. I wasn't sure if I should take the leaves or not but I decided to remove any that were not looking normal. This was last week and so far so good. It's starting to throw some new growth and the old leaves are being replaced by much greener, much nicer new leaves. I honestly can't say if it was the repotting, leaf pruning, or a combination of the two but I don't think it would hurt to remove the dead/damaged leaves especially if your seeing green. Hope this helps. Good luck. sw

Thanks
Thanks for the reply. I was unclear in how I described it. I don't have any new green leaves or buds. But when I scrape the bark or break off a twig there is green under the bark, so at least I know the tree is not totally dead yet.

Rob,
That's how I understood it. From my understanding azaleas are pretty tough unless your talking root damage. You could probably safely remove all the leaves and it would throw new growth and fluorish. Good luck and let me know how it turns out! sw
