Help Me Make It Through.
I have mentioned it before but now I really need some help. I have said before that I have always admired this hobby from afar but had my wife thrust me into it for christmas. I have been taking the best care I can of my little "nana" hoping it will make it to spring when I can place it outside where it belongs . So how do I get from here(4ft snow and frozen solid ) to the time when things start growing .I have several good books that were recommended in the back pages of these posts that I have read from cover to cover to cover filling my head with more ideas than a virgin on a first date.
A major stumbling block that I do forsee is the lack of availability of any new trees or advice(the in person kind ) I have visited a couple of local nurseries and they didn't have any material at all ,no trees, books ,tools or even anyone to bounce a couple of ideas off as near as I can tell I may be the only person on this island in the north atlantic who has more than a passinng interest in these little trees. At least one that lasts longer than it takes for a malsai to die.I end this and place my sanity in your capable hands ![]()

Ft-N-Mouth: My solution was to pack it in and move to SUNNY Florida. Out trees can remain outside 12 of every year. BUT if that's impossible go ahead and work with native species; don't forget the potential bonsais in yard shrubs.

F-n-M: I was being flip with my response to your delima and I apologize. I am not really familiar with fauna in your area. Do you have any type low growing, gnarled shrubs? Almost anything that is used for shrubry can be a potensai. The most insignificient weather beaten, cliff hanging, trampled, hard wood plant can become a bonsai. I looked at pictures of the hill side above the Battery and I would bet there a number of plants growing there that would be good subjects for bonsais.

Lots of plants have "nana" as the last part of their name. I do need the first part of the name before I can be of any help. Sorry |

Foot,
Put out a personal ad in your paper for any other enthusiasts. Some of our local papers run free ads. Put up notes on bulletin boards etc....... best way to go is to find others in your community that bonsai. If you can make local connections that is your best opportunity to learn what you need in your zone. Trees, hardiness, storage, soil, collection, you name it. I connected with one person that was an enthusiast, we shared info, went collecting, learned as we went, found others.....started our own club. Perhaps you are more rural....but it may help. Make friends with the nursery people anyhow. They will connect you with some good stock. Order stuff through them, and if they know their stuff, they will help you learn. My local nurseryman loves his work, and is so willing to share his knowledge, I am so lucky this way. He also lets us have our meetings at his nursery. And keep up with the members here, ask questions, share pic....read read read. BonsaiTalk has its share of knowledge as well. Good luck. Paul Ron, if I remember correctly, he has a Juniper procumbens 'nana'.

Put up a flyer at the nursery and tell them when and where your new bonsai club meets!

yes Ron it is a juniper procumbens 'nana'.Supposed to be 3 yrs old and came in a lovely little black plastic pot.
RMM, that area around the battery is fabulous, after i read your reply I started thinking of other trails and walks I know od that are just ass nice or nicer,I guess we tend to be forgetful of the beauty around us,especially here on the Island . Thanks. I guess thereal challange is creating beauty in what w have around us and not being envious or discouraged by what others have or where they are. If I get a chance to do some collecting this year I'll remember to take a camera and let everyone in on some of this great place I take for granted. TTFN ![]()

Hi F-N-M,
you wrote:If I get a chance to do some collecting this year I'll remember to take a camera and let everyone in on some of this great place I take for granted. Don't publicise too much, people who moved to Florida will go up north (LOL) ![]() Seriously, I think that for now(well when winter's over) your best bet is to collect trees that are hardy in your zone. As long as you take care of the roots while doing this... I'm shure that you have great specimens in your area. White pine, some larch, spruce, etc... Check in your area for some horticulture club. They may have bonsai enthousiast in their group.
