Help Identifying trees
Hey!
I found a great site to help with tree identification. It's: http://www.arborday.org/trees/ECstart.html You answer questions, and it tells you what kind of tree you have! Capt. Jack |

Re: Help Identifying trees
Eeks. *I tried that database with a few known bonsai:
According to the Wizard, those Japanese White Pines I imported are actually "Eastern White Pine" * My Black Pines are "Jack Pine." My California Juniper and Hinoki Cypress are both actually "Southern White Cedar." *My Chinese Elms are "Russian Olives" Who woulda thunk!

Re: Help Identifying trees
my Flandeyant and my Jacarandas were (the closest match) a silk tree...
But, it is nice, at least it brings you close to the family... or not? ![]()

Re: Help Identifying trees
I tried it too and appareantly silver birch is a mulberry, [i:ab2d3f0316]Juniperus communis[/i:ab2d3f0316] is an eastern hemlock and boxwood is a quacking aspen.
I didn't know these either, I guess. Zeb

Re: Help Identifying trees
I got similar results to youse guys. Think we should tell them?
They seem to think they are the keepers of all knowledge of trees. Might hurt their feelings.

Re: Help Identifying trees
I think the difficulty is
1) there are not a huge number of trees in the database there. *Somewhere around 65. 2) and the trees that are listed are (predominantly) North American natives or naturalized species, and probably only a handful are *commonly* used for bonsai. *I marked those that I have even seen as bonsai in bold Here are the species I was able to find by running to the bottom of most of the lists. *I missed the Quaking Aspen, so I may have missed a few. The idea is inspiring though. *Maybe we could make a similar one for the most common bonsai plants, of which there are probably only about 50-60 species, but mostly entirely different ones! Re: Help Identifying trees
I just wanted to add this to the list:
[b:f7c9c18668]Scotch pine[/b:f7c9c18668] - Very common in northern Europe [b:f7c9c18668]Atlantic cedar[/b:f7c9c18668] - I know nothing about this species, but you can see it in Peter Chan's "Bonsai - The Art of Growing and Keeping Miniature Trees" Zeb

Re: Help Identifying trees
Sorry, my list were the ones I found on that Tree Identifier site, not examples of popular bonsai trees.
Just wanted to clear that up!

Re: Help Identifying trees
Yes, I understood that, but I just added that the scotch pine and the atlantic cedar are also used for bonsai. They are in your species list, but they are not bold.
Sorry, if this was confusing. Zeb

Re: Help Identifying trees
Yeah, found their database rather... small. But it may be a good starting place for morons like me that don't know a tree from a knot-hole in the ground!
