Help with Ficus
Hi,
My girlfriend bought me this Ficus the other day and I'm not sure what to do with it. I was wondering if I chopped it down to a stump, will it pop out new shoots. Also If I chop it down should I put it in a growbox first or later. If anyone has anyother suggestions please let me know I'm all ears. Thanks George |

HI youve got a very nice tree there ,if it was mine ide put it into a grow box (polystyriene ffruit box or tray)and let it grow a bit more to establish some feeder roots .I would then probly air layer a few branches and then the main trunk a few times over a few years and in doing so your trunk will have grown some more girth .
hope this helps and have plenty of fun Simon Cruden |

Depends on what size tree you want as Simon says...
If you want to make a tree out of what you have....Airlayer it here so you can keep the top for another bonsai... Or just cut it leaving the first two branches...That will cause it to reshoot lower...as it does this you can keep reducing the height over the next few months... Good luck Tai |

Hi,
I think I would make an ever more drastic pruning: 1/ air-layering the top to keep it as a house-plant or stock for further cuttings 2/ cut the air layer and keep the base of the trunk. In good conditions (warmth, light, humidity), it will produce new buds that you can then select to form your tree. In my opinion, if you cut it too high, it will stay thin, with a twist at the bottom, and a long straight trunk...

Wow thanks for the advice. I'd like to keep the tree a smaller size, because I think the bottom of the trunk has the most character and if it's to tall then it is just a tree with a curve at the bottom and then a long straight trunk. If I put it in a growbox should I do anything with the roots, or just leave the roots as is. Also before I attempt the airlayer should I let it establish in the box or can I do it at the same time. Or if I chop it like Taipan said and leave the first to branches, do I do it at the time I put it in the box or do I wait and let it settle in to it's new home. Again thanks for all the advice and Ideas of what I can do.
Thanks George |
