Help with an Adenium Obesum AKA Desert Rose

I just bought an Adenium Obesum AKA Desert Rose. I just learned that it actually sprouts flowers in the late spring into early summer. Does anyone know if i need to water more (im watering only when the soil is pretty dry and i have it sitting in my garden area during the day and in my house at night) or prune (if so could you let me know what i need to clip). Also is it recommended that i purchase a fertilizer? If so what kind should i get? and how many times should i use it? If anyone could answer any of these questions it would be greatly apreciated! Thanks

Can't answer your questions well, I killed the one I grew, but I have seen many times, a warning that at least the sap is very poisonous, so be carefull.

well ill take a crack at this, but i am no expert in the species. i own two of these and i also water only wheen dry, it is a succulent after all. as for fert. use a bloom booster fert but also with a good amount of nitrogen. one of my plants lost all of its leaves one time, if this happens do not be alarmed they will come back as long as it continues with proper care. i dont see blooms on mine every year, but like i said i am no expert.

Hey thanks. I had one more question, i watered the plant about 2 days ago. It's been pretty cloudy out since then and the soil is still damp. i was wondering if this is going to rot the roots? and if so how could i dry the soil out?

I have but one desert rose, purchased about a year ago, from a nursery in central Texas. Several weeks after bringing it home, it bloomed like crazy. I counted 50 flowers on it. It seems to be in a constant cycle of bloom/no bloom/ bloom again. Not sure why but suspect it really likes the hot temps. I have learned that I can cut back too long branches and it will bud again at the cut end. When I repotted it, I even cut away some of the base with no problem. I will note that when I cut the base, there were other feeder roots still intact. Not really sure how often I water, maybe once or twice a week, and I keep it in full sun. I should also note that when I cut back the branches, I only cut two at a time, waiting til they budded before cutting more. Hope some of this helps. Larry
