Hello all...I'm a newbie at this.
Hello all.....I am totally new to bonsai wolrd. A good buddy of mine owns a greenhouse and is going out of buisness. (after 78 years) So he gave me a good deal on some tees, two free ones actually and a couple for 1/2 price. I know they were well cared for, (I'm there every Saturday morning for my morning coffee and to b.s. for a while, lol) They are small so I don't know if that puts them in the "Mallsai" or not. Not that it matters, I like them. This is what I picked up.
Chinese Elm (elsmo) Buddhist Pine Firethorn Jade I have them indoors under lights. A 3000k 6,500k and a full spectrum. 5 inches to a foot away from the lights. They are in an unheated basement so it's not too dry, with temps in the mid to low 60's. I'm sure I'll be throwing a lot of questions everyones way in the future.....Take it easy.

It will also help us if you fill in your location and growing zone/heat zone information. You can do that by going to "User CP". We base a lot of our information on where you live.
Welcome to bonsai! Joanie

do you have a backyard? The trees would benefit from spending the spring/summer outdoors. You have a mix of trees, requiring a variety of conditions. If you are serious about getting into bonsai I would recommend doing some reading and get your cultivation skills up. being able to keep trees alive is obviously at the root of bonsai.
read read read! and dont get discouraged! Last edited by AMKhalid : 11-Mar-2007 at 05:12 PM. |

In NY so winter is very very cold with that white stuff falling from the sky. And he/she brought them inside for winter and put them under lights.
I'm new too, dont have any white stuff falling, actually Ive only seen snow once in my life, son and daughter have never seen it at all. There is a rumour that snow once fell in our local town, but that was a rumour twenty years old. Its summer in sunny South Australia, Ive been picking up feral ash and elm and olive trees, some of them I think will make good bonsai one day. I'm here to sit at the feet of the experts and learn. I grow herbs, so not a horticultural idiot, but bonsai is one thing I dont know well, yet.
