Hawthorn Red Berries!

Hi everyone, i was wondering if any of you have a hawthorn, or more specifically a washington hawthorn? I have one baby which is only 5 years old. I have seen a picture of another hawthorn on this site i think it's in treebay's picture gallery! but i was wondering if anyone knew how old these tree's need to be before they start producing the red berries? im wondering whether my tree is far too young to get berries? I'd also like to hear from anyone else that has tree's that produce berries, doesnt have to be a hawthorn im just wondering at what age did your tree's start getting berries on them. really curious! thanks.

Here's a pic of my baby washington hawthorn. (in a growing pot)

BG, I'm not sure when these trees produce berries. I think there may be quite a bit of individual variation. I do know they are a wonderful species for bonsai. I saw a very nice one at the Pan Pacific Collection at the Weyerhouse Facility in Tacoma Washington and many pictures of excellent trees.

Last year, I noticed a great many seedlings under trees at the carwash I use and spoke to the manager about taking some. "No problem", she told me, but I didn't get back to collect them until last Fall. Thanks to a very hot Summer, they'd all died when I came back, so I had to content myself with some berries, from which I hope seedlings will emerge this Spring. I guess if they do, I'm alot further away from berries on mine than you are on yours, so take heart!

Regards, Fred

Washington hawthorns are very strange plants. I have heard of some that will flower as young as 5, some flower only after 20 years and some never flower. What I would do is sprinkle the soil with bone meal every fall and hope for flowers in the spring.

Hawthorns typically take twenty years or more to flower.
