Hawthorn Back Budding

I have an old hawthorn that is styled in a slanting/windswept style. It was collected in 81, I purchased it this spring. Sorry for the run around, but its and old tree that I havn't had long, and it has been growing really well since I got it. But I screwed up and managed to kill the top branch while pulling it down to the correct angle. The top is jinned, and this was the only living branch for +-4". I was hoping if someone with more experiance could guess if this guy will back bud or die back to the next branch? Should I cut it back hard and hope for a sprout, dump alot of nitrogen on it, or just leave it alone and keep my fingers crossed.

Do you have a picture? It wouldn't be very prudent of me to make any styling suggestions without seeing one.

As far as horticulture is concerned, if the hawthorn is healthy, it will regrow from a stump.

Regards,

Matt

Sorry, Matt I don't have a pic yet, I've been meaning to get one but haven't had time. My main question was about the back budding, I think this tree has been developed in this style for several years. It had just been neglected due to the previous owners health and had grown out of shape and the branches needed angling down. I'll post as soon as I can get a pic. Thanks Matt.

Don't worry about styling this one right now. Just get it healthy. Let it grow and develop about 10x this foliage volume and then see what's going to work.

Is it hot next to this fence? Have you been fertilizing, how?

Regards,

Matt

It doesn't live there, I have a bench out back that I keep my trees on, they get morning sun and partial shade from the big trees in the after noon. I feed them weekly. The tree has been pushing alot of new growth since I got it, but it only had the three major branches. Its pushing growth now, but the bark on the top branch split when I lowered it even though it was wrapped in rafia. How much foliage should I let it grow? I don't think the right side of the tree has much of a chance in growing due to its angle, and I think the top was attacked by a borer and has alot of dead wood.
