Hawthorn 10 For £10
Hi, i have a garden centre near me that is selling bundles of hedging plants, 10 for £10. My favourite is hawthorn and i was wondering, these bundles are fairly tight and if i left them like that for a time would they become one tree, or all join together? i have been interested in this option since seeing a website where a guy wrapped lots of trident maple seedlings i think, around a base, i didnt particularly like the end result but i thought it could have looked quite good just without the wooden form, using lots of trees to form a large formal upright type tree. sorry for the slightly hazy idea
any ideas/advice etc.? Thanks Rowan

Hi Rowan,
Yes this it quite acceptable to do, the end result is a clump style bonsai, with lots of trunks all coming from the same place. The placement in the garden centre bundles probably would not be ideal, you would more than likely need to re-arrange them to give a pleasing silhouette. Regards, Chris.

I should clarify that my suggestion was for tying and eventually fusing at the bases only, with the trunks all seperate further up.
Regards, Chris

Rowan, While you are at the garden centre, have a look on those tables where they have piles of reduced books for the book "Create your own Bonsai" by Ken Norman. It has lots of starter projects in it, in particluar there is a clump style done with a bundle of Fagus sylvatica purpurea hedging material. Might be worth a look for you.
Regards, Chris.

Rowan, as well as the refence chris has given you try to check out bonsai life histories by david prescott, in that he fuses together trident maple saplings over a rock all the way up until they are one tree! He also shows you the process.

Do you think he could speed the fusing process up by treating them as a graft? You know, by removing the bark on parts of the trunk that would touch? Might this work?

Rowan , no problem although you missed a good show, first time i've been on the sales area but all good fun.
Jim and rowan Yess Yes Yes! I've seen two cotoneasters fused together like this at the base to form a double cascade , they removed the trunk and cambrium (I think) from both trees and rafia'd them together (followed by wiring to hold it in place) and let them be for a year, the result as the joined areas regrow they fused together! Should be even better now, it was well over a year ago that i last saw the cotoneaster cascade. Jonny. |
