Andy,

Fantastic work by Kenji. What type of juniper is this?

David

Andy Oh well, would have been nice to see what they were before. I have seen Kenji Miyata's work before, to say he is good is not giving him enough credit. I just thought you'd have some of the unstyled so we could see what was/is growing in dem dere hills.....

Jay,

These junipers were just big, messy mops with long shoots all over. As you can see from the current forms, many of the very large (1" - 2" diameter) branches needed to be lowered considerably. There are very large wires on several of the branches to bring them into check.

Obviously, these are not mature forms and they look a bit ragged, but they used to be relatively untrained shrubs. These forms are significant improvements.

It's funny that you mention wanting to see before/after images because today I'm working on preparing a feature for BTO Journal that shows "new born bonsai," before and after for a few of them, for Kenji's work. It will show the rough stock and the newly trained trees for about 4 or 5 of them and the results of first stylings (without the before pic) for a few more. It should be interesting for many beginners to see what was done and try to figure out why. It'll be upon the site in the next couple of days.

Kind regards,

I wish I could see some before pictures as well. Upon doing a web search I kept coming up with a link for http://www.bonsaiwest.com This happens to be very close to where I live (I visit them frequently) On November 8th they are offering a class called Homage to Hatanaka

the first of a 2-section class in which we will try to replicate one of the wonderful trees originally created by California's Mr. Hatanaka

Looks pretty cool.. Maybe I will have to check it out..

Hi!

This may sound little bit stupid, but why those magnificent trees aren't bonsai.

I keep almost everything which is in bonsai pot and is styled as a bonsai.

Hi Hitza,

I made that particular qualification because these trees, as you see them, have just had their first styling for bonsai. In essence, they were "just born." I sort of equate this analogy to the difference between "baby" and "child" and "man." When you say that "Man has accomplished a lot in the past century," it is clear that you mean "humankind." However there is also the distinction between the various levels of development for "men."

These trees are chonologically mature, but in the art of bonsai, they are brand new babies. In time (a shorter time for these than for some), they will have matured to the extent that they are more recognizable as "bonsai." Now they're much closer to "bonsai material."

Give 'em time. ;-)

This farm is located in Southern California, Anahiem to be exact. All trees are for sale and they are priced to move. If any of you are local and would like to see what they have left i can arrange a time for you. For more information you can email me at jerrychsien@hotmail.com
