Hatanaka Bonsai Farm.....

Hi everyone,

I'm new to the bonsai world and love my tree. My girlfriend's grand parents happen to own a bonsai farm,
"The Hatanaka Bonsai Farm." So we went there the other day and picked out 2 nice size trees. Beautiful farm with lots of big bonsai and little ones as well.

Sadly, now they are too old to operate the farm. Now my girlfriends mom and her bother are taking care of the place. I've heard that Mr. Hatanaka is one of the best.

And where is this farm?
Can anyone visit it?
Are there more trees for sale?

The Hatanakas have some wonderful material - stuff that cannot be found anywhere else.

Here are 3 trees that came from their farm. They were each grown in the ground for about 55 years - no kidding. These trees are not yet really bonsai, but were just styled for the first time by Kenji Miyata. As you can see, they will make wonderful bonsai in a short time.

Each is nearly 3' tall.

Kind regards,

...and the last. This one has an extra long jin at the bottom that was left there only as an anchor for a turnbuckle wire. In time, it will be shortened drastically.

Andy, thank you for giving us a view as to this 'farms' material. I can only dream of having trees of this quality, hey, maybe I'll win the lottery (do you need to buy tickets to do that?)

All three are wonderful, the last is the best in my mind. Question on the middle one. The Jin seems to be out of scale with the rest of the tree. Is this only the 2-d visual I'm getting or does it need to be reduced (Thickness not length). I admit not seeing the tree in person, I am 'assuming' the thickness of the live branches.

Thanks for sharing
Jay

Yes, Jay, that jin has been kept at its current heft only to serve as an anchor for a turnbuckle wire. After it has served its purpose, just as in the last tree, this jin will be reduced significantly. Good eye.
