Hard pruning a schefflera

Does Schefflera A. take hard pruning well? I have one that I am training as root over rock that I repotted a little while ago and it is in need of a real good pruning. Can I trim it way back? This will not be a total defoliation.

Yes, it its healthy you can cut everything off.
Defoliation also works well with the same precautions.

As far as I can tell its healthy. It was repotted about a month or two ago and has since put out new growth and new roots. I'll give it a go. Thanks!

A couple of years ago frost got mine and I cut it way back and it is spectacler now. So it must be preaty hardy, or at least here in So.Ca.

Pruning a Schefflera is not only feasible, it is necessary to obtain a beautiful shape. However, the proper sequence should have been cutting first, waiting for new leaves (about a month), then repotting and/or cutting the roots. It is safer to to this during a period of fast growth (summer, nitrogen-rich fertilizer).

Jerry -

I am curious about the precautions as I was considering defoliation for one of my own. In general, what would you consider to be the best time and conditions?

Thanks in advance.
