Hackberry...I think
I was driving home on Friday and i was picking up some rocks to put around my pond when i saw this tree in a pile by some construction trash. I pick it up and put it in my truck. When i got home i trimmed off most of the foliage except for some foliage and any new shoots. I stuck it in the ground till i could plant it in a large grow box. The leaves were willted so i watered it really well and in the morning the leaves were back up. I put my wallet next to the trunk so you could see the size if it. I think it's a hackberry, but i'm not sure. I should have taken a picture of the leaves....I bleeds Dark red....Do hackberrys bleed red?
Sorry about the pics...it was my phone's camera Last edited by rschlafer : 24-Jul-2006 at 11:10 AM. |

I know. I hope it lives. It was really dry but i think it might pull through. I'm just going to let it grow for a few years before i try anything...I would like to get it to about 2 feet tall...It is currently about 3+ feet.

No. I have several smaller southern Hackberry --Celtis Laevigata. They do not bleed red even after I trunk chopped them.
A close up of the foliage would help ID your plant. |

How red is red?
Austalian Red Gum trees and eucalyptus trees can bleed red, as can mahogany trees. I don't think any of those lives in Colorado, though, ![]() |

Yes, I don't believe they do either. I did a google search and didn't see any tree that i thought grew in Colorado. The red is a real dark red...Like Maroon or drying blood. I put up a leaf...i'm not sure if you'll be able to tell by the picture. A lot of the leaves have dropped...BUT there are new shoots budding out that look okay.

I don't think this is a hackberry. Veins on the leaves are too evenly spaced and the leaf is a little too round. Hackberry leaves are closer to spear shaped and have irregular veining.
