Thumbs up Growing a Juniper from a stump

My dad is about to remove a large chinese juniper from the garden- it was about 5m high but has been cut down to 1m, and its remained healthy and growing for the last fortnight. I was wonderering if it would be possible to salvage the stump, which has several young shoots emmerging near the base, and train it as a bonsai.

Does anyone have any ideas about how to do this? the tree is going to be removed soon, so there's no chance of cutting around the roots, letting it rest and lifting it next spring. if i soak the root ball in water for several weeks, would this be sufficient to let it develop new feeder roots before reptting or should i pot it straight away?

Any suggestions and expertise please!

Repot with b-1 because you you can't lose. Do not over water.I use dry stal it's like cat letter but used for horse's. It is baked so it dose not brake down with watering.

get as much fibrous root as you can and repot in free draining soil. Water sparingly. just hope the bugger stays alive. don't worry about styling for at least a couple seasons

Book

Right, that sounds simple enough (famous last words). So, how would you recomend I build a grow box? Should I use treated/ untreated timber? I was thinking could wood preservative i.e. 'creosote' harm the roots in any way? Should I bring the stump into the greenhouse (unheated) over the winter?

Thanks

See above article on grow-box making. Keep plant in shade and mist twice daily until you see signs of new growth. Gradually introduce back into sun.

Have fun!

Any pics of the stump in question, El ?

Cool

i'll get some pics soon. Just to give u an idea, at the base it's about 18 inches in diameter! When i cut the top 4 metres off, I found 6 tennis balls and a frisbee. Luckily, its in a semi raised bed, one side is a 3 foot high wall and the other side, the lawn, is level with the trunk. When I knock the wall down over xmas I should find lots of fiberous roots, that should make digging it out easier.

There's a big old cypress in there too, I might as well rescue that tree as well!
