Grasses, Weeds, and Moss...
Okay, so it looked cute, especially on the "forest floor".....a low, creeping grass-like plant that throws out runners with little flowers on them. It keeps the soil in place, it seems to be a friend.
But, as in many friendships, it is sapping the strength of the stronger one. As a beginner, I liked the way it looked and the way it held the soil so that my less than perfect watering can didn't just cause erosion every time I watered. Moss is hard to grow in full sun and stuff, so this seemed a decent substitute. Don't be fooled, my friends! ![]() If you pull one of the established clumps of it out of the soil, it will show you just how many roots it has. And how it competes for the nutrients, air, water, and space that is so valued in our small containers. Pull it out, pull it out now, and be ever vigilant. It isn't a friend, and it will slowly sap your bonsai of strength. Joanie |

In summary:
Just say no to grass and weed! Regards, Mark

Irish moss is a plant that will very quickly over run a bonsai dish. I don't know if the birds are moving seeds from around my water garden but its poping up in a number of my stock trees that are growing in nursery pots.

You can have moss...
Lots and lots of moss.... No, on second thought lots to moss would keep things too damp..... So you can have a little moss. And a little clay pagoda if you like. Joanie |
