Grape Seeds
This is kind of a nerdly question and really can't be applied to bonsai, but what kind of plant grows from a grape seed? Obviously I know it will be a grape vine, but I'd like to know how to care for a grape vine. I planted a seed that I found inside a globe grape from the grocery store (for food) that I use to feed my skink. I actually planted it as kind of a joke, who would think that a grape seed would germinate (come to think of it, the seeds go through the perfect stratification process, with the fruit's moisture and the chilling!), and within a few weeks to my surprise, it sprouted! It is growing now and has two whole leaves
but I don't know what to do for it. Any suggestions? |

I have seen a couple of pics of grape vines used as what they called bonsai, I think it was more of a gimmick. But, the fact is, that the vines are perrenial in nature (meaning they don't die at the end of a season), so the care could be given similar to bonsai. Soil should be fast draining, I would think that most if not all vines do full sun, at least all the ones I have ever seen. Since you have a fast draining containerized area for the plant, you will need to water and fertilize regularly. Plan on adjusting plant/ container size as needed, trim roots when needed. In most vineyards, it looks like they cut the vines back every season, so you may want to consider this. You know, if you can get the leaves to reduce, you may be able to make a believable bonsai out of it, although, plan on it being a normal container plant.

Hi Aubrey,
Here's a link to info. on grape bonsai, as well as some pics of some nice grape bonsai. I recently saw a picture of John Naka with his grape bonsai tree but I cannot remember where I saw it for the life of me. www.bonsaiinn.com From what I understand you can either try to reduce the leaf size which means probably no fruit, or you can let the leaves grow and possibly have grapes. I for one really like the grape bonsais I've seen online, although they are somewhat unusual. Hope this helps.
